Sorrento Mesa is located just west of Mira Mesa, north of La Jolla, and sits east of Sorrento Valley. The area is dominated by telecommunications, wireless, and biotechnology research industry leaders, offering vast employment opportunities.

Businesses operating in Sorrento Mesa including industry giants such as Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Fujitsu, Cingular Wireless, and Gen-Probe. The community is integral part of San Diego's economy. Many hotels in the community provide plenty of choices for visiting families or travelers in town on business.

The History of Sorrento Mesa

Sorrento Mesa is a subarea of the Mira Mesa Community Plan. The community has been and continues to be a central hub for high technology firms operating in San Diego County.

In the early 1970s, Sorrento Mesa was still mostly undeveloped land west of Mira Mesa. In 1975, about 180 firms existed in the area, totaling only 5,000 employees. Currently, Sorrento Mesa boasts somewhere in the range of 4,000 firms and 100,000 employees.

Type of Housing

Sorrento Mesa developers use the concept of Smart Growth for commercial and residential expansion. Neighborhoods located throughout the area are in close proximity to businesses, making the commute to work a breeze.

The area offers different housing options including middle-class homes, condominiums, and townhouses.

Transportation

Sorrento Mesa is conveniently located adjacent to I-805, which connects to the I-5 northbound and runs all the way down to the Mexican border when traveling south. Ted Williams Parkway, or State Route 56, passes just north of Sorrento Mesa allowing easy access to other parts of San Diego toward the east. The San Diego Coaster operates routes around Sorrento Mesa and connections to various destinations within the County.

Education

San Diego City Schools (SDCS) provides education for residents of Sorrento Mesa. SDCS is the second largest district in California, serving a diverse body of students from different backgrounds. In addition to SDCS, La Jolla Country Day offers a nearby alternative to public schooling as a private college prepatory school.

For those wanting to participate in higher education the University of California, San Diego has an extended campus located in Sorrento Mesa.

Recreation

Sorrento Mesa's location offers easy access to a variety of attractions and parks nearby. Fun for the whole family awaits at Sea World, which is located less than 10 miles from Sorrento Mesa. Golfers can enjoy many courses in the area, including the beautiful Torrey Pines Golf Course. Parks are accessible just down the street in Mira Mesa, presenting sports league opportunities for both kids and adults.
